I thought both of these readings were interesting. The ideas in both articles will be very useful in moving forward with our own site analysis. Looking back, I now wish I had done the readings when we first started project 1 because of their direct relationship to what we are doing. I really liked Hoods approach to design. He looks at landscape differently and does not make any initial judgements on what he sees. He looks at the landscape and its effects on all different types of people as the most important aspect. Just as Gila told us, the users are the most important part of site analysis. Kevin Lynch's in depth site planning was very thorough and made a lot of sense. It is very important to thoroughly understand the landscape problem and ask the right questions before you are able to come up with a solution. He also talks about how the users are very important. Not just the influential clients, but the others effected by the design as well. I also agree that the ecology is very important to a good design and should be more strongly emphasized. Something else that is essential to good site planning is to plan for change and management. I think too many designers come up with great designs, just to then walk away from them without any plan to accommodate for the growing and ever changing environment.
Both readings were a great and I learned a lot from them. There were some great graphics in the readings as well!
