Terry Duffy: Hood & Lynch readings

Hood's method of site analysis does not forgo the basics of Lynch's writing. There still is historical data, land use, and demographics gathered and analyzed. I feel he takes the site analysis a step further by observing and reflecting on the site over a period of time. I feel that a good design should take into consideration not only the potential users, but the effect of the design on the users for all different times of day and year. I feel that many designs are static for a chosen time frame.

Gila's presentation showed several good designs that were effective even in snow.

I also feel the Hood method may lead to a more interesting design because he creates abstract painting to record his impression of that particular days diary of events.

Terry,
I'm very happy that you liked the reading.
You mentioned designers who decide they know better what's good for the users, that's a very good and interesting issue. Since we (designers) serve the public (a very general term) it is very important to know who is the public (the users), and to choose who are the ones that we're designing for (since we can't design for everybody). We, as designers, have a lot of power and influence on people's lives and we should be aware of this power.

good work!
I'm glad you brought some interesting issues for the discussion.
